What Is Microcement

A surface finish unlike anything else

Microcement is a thin-layer architectural coating system — applied 2–3mm thick — that creates seamless, waterproof surfaces with no grout lines and no demolition. It installs directly over existing tile, concrete, or drywall in most cases.

The result is a surface that looks custom-designed because it is. Every installation is handcrafted, trowel-applied in multiple layers, and unique to the space it's in. No two microcement installations are exactly alike.

We use the Microcement USA system — a premium architectural-grade material that is waterproof from the trowel, flexible enough to resist cracking, and hard enough to outlast most conventional surfaces.

Showers & Wet Areas

Waterproof shower walls, floors, and niches — fully seamless. Requires a reinforced system with proper membrane. We specify and install the correct wet-area system every time.

Walls & Feature Walls

Dramatic textured wall finishes for living rooms, entryways, and commercial spaces. Applied directly over drywall or existing tile. No demo, minimal disruption.

🔥

Countertops & Sinks

Custom microcement countertops and integrated sinks for kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor kitchens. Sealed for durability and resistance to heat, moisture, and everyday use.

The Microcement USA Difference

Not all microcement is equal

The microcement market has exploded — and with it, a wave of cheap imports, DIY kits, and untrained installers. Many of those systems crack, discolor, or require heavy re-sealing within a few years. The Microcement USA system is different.

Microcement USA is a premium architectural material used through Microcement USA. It is waterproof from the trowel — not just after sealing. It's flexible, so it moves with the substrate instead of cracking. And it cures extremely hard, lasting 20+ years with proper care.

Cheap Systems
Cracks within 2–3 years
Discolors with moisture
Requires constant re-sealing
Not truly waterproof
Fails in showers and wet areas

Microcement Showers & Wet Areas

Seamless showers
done correctly

A microcement shower is one of the most requested luxury bathroom features we install — and one of the most technically demanding. Done right, it lasts decades and requires minimal maintenance. Done wrong, it cracks, discolors, or leaks within a year.

Showers require a reinforced system. That means waterproofing membrane, fiberglass reinforcement mesh embedded in the build coats, and a sealer system rated for constant water exposure. We do not install showers with the same system we use on walls or dry floors.

We've installed seamless microcement in shower floors, shower walls, full wet rooms, bathroom floors, and integrated floor-to-wall bathroom systems. Every wet area installation is priced and scoped correctly — reinforced labor and materials are always included when they're required.

Shower system or standard system? Any contractor quoting you a microcement shower at the same price as a dry wall installation either doesn't know what they're doing or is cutting corners on your reinforcement. Ask them specifically what wet-area system they're specifying.

Our Process

How we install microcement

Every installation follows a structured, multi-layer process. There are no shortcuts — each step matters for the final result.

01
Surface & Prep
02
Primer & Reinforce
03
Build & Finish
04
Sealer System
01

Surface Assessment & Prep

We evaluate the substrate for flatness, structural integrity, and moisture. Wet areas get waterproofing membrane. Movement joints are addressed. Prep determines everything — we don't skip this step.

The most important step. A bad prep = a failed installation, no matter how good the material.
02

Primer & Reinforcement

Primer is applied to bond the system to the substrate. Reinforcement mesh is embedded in build coats on floors, showers, and any surface prone to movement. This is what keeps the system flexible and crack-resistant.

Reinforcement is non-negotiable for floors and wet areas. It's what separates a 20-year install from a 2-year failure.
03

Build & Finish Coats

The microcement is applied in multiple troweled layers — each sanded, inspected, and allowed to dry before the next. The finish coat creates the final texture and appearance. This is handcrafted work, not sprayed or rolled on.

Every finish is unique. The handcrafted nature of trowel work is what makes each microcement installation one-of-a-kind.
04

Sealer System

A multi-coat protective sealer system is applied to complete the installation. Sealer choice depends on the application — wet areas, floors, and walls each have specific requirements. We specify the correct system for each project.

The right sealer for the right surface. This step locks in durability and determines how the surface will perform and be maintained long-term.

Dry time matters. Microcement is a multi-day process. Rushing dry times between coats leads to failures. We schedule projects with the correct timeline built in — not what's fastest for us, but what's correct for the system.

Why Nichols Concrete Sealing

Certified, experienced, accountable

We are one of only 3 certified microcement installers in St. George, Utah. That certification isn't a marketing title — it requires hands-on training, verified installation competency, and ongoing access to the Microcement USA / Microcement USA system and support network.

We also come from a concrete and coatings background. We understand prep, substrate conditions, moisture, and how surface systems behave over time. That knowledge makes a difference in how we plan and execute every microcement project.

We're not the cheapest option. We're the option that prepares correctly, uses the right materials, and delivers work that holds up. If you're pricing microcement in Southern Utah, ask any contractor which system they use and whether they're certified to install it.

Investment

What does microcement cost?

Microcement is a premium architectural finish — it's priced accordingly. The cost reflects hand-applied craftsmanship, multiple layered coats, dry time management, specialty materials, and the level of installer skill required to do it correctly. Here's what typically drives the number:

WALLS & FEATURE SURFACES
$18–$32 / sq ft

Interior accent walls, fireplace surrounds, feature walls, commercial interiors. Fast system typically used. Minimum project charges apply.

FLOORS
$22–$40 / sq ft

Living areas, kitchens, commercial floors. Reinforced system. More labor, more coats, heavier traffic demands. Pricing depends on prep complexity and existing substrate.

SHOWERS & WET AREAS
$30–$55 / sq ft

Full wet-area systems with waterproofing membrane and reinforcement mesh. Most labor-intensive. Minimum project charges apply — small showers are often flat-rate quoted.

CUSTOM SINKS & FURNITURE
Quoted by project

Integrated sinks, vanity tops, custom furniture pieces. Complexity, shape, and sealer requirements determine price. Contact us for a custom scope.

Why pricing varies: Surface prep complexity, existing substrate condition, number of returns required, color and finish complexity, and travel all factor in. A quote after seeing the actual space is always more accurate than a number over the phone. We provide free, no-pressure estimates.

How It Compares

Microcement vs. other finishes

Common Questions

Microcement FAQ

Questions we get from homeowners, designers, and builders in Southern Utah.

Microcement is a thin-layer decorative coating — not structural concrete. It's applied 2–3mm thick over almost any existing surface without demolition. It creates seamless, waterproof surfaces with no grout lines. The Microcement USA system we use through Microcement USA is waterproof from the trowel, flexible, and extremely hard when cured. Regular concrete is poured and structural. Microcement is a finish coating system requiring skill, layering, and correct product selection.
Yes — in most cases. Microcement can be applied directly over existing tile, concrete, drywall, and cement board after proper surface prep, priming, and reinforcement where needed. No demo is usually required. The substrate needs to be structurally sound, flat, and free of movement. We assess this during the free estimate before committing to the approach.
Yes. The Microcement USA system is waterproof from the trowel — not just after sealer. Showers require a reinforced system with a proper waterproofing membrane and are a standard application for us. The key distinction: many cheap microcement products are not truly waterproof, and installers without wet-area experience often skip the reinforcement required for long-term performance. We don't.
Microcement is a premium installation and priced accordingly. Cost depends on square footage, surface type (wet vs. dry), complexity, accessibility, and current surface condition. Showers require reinforced systems and more labor. Walls are generally less intensive than floors. Small projects often carry higher per-square-foot pricing because the setup, dry time management, and return visits are significant regardless of size. We provide free on-site estimates after reviewing your project — no guessing on either side.
A properly installed Microcement USA system is extremely durable. The material cures very hard and — with correct sealer maintenance — should last 20+ years in residential use. Longevity depends heavily on prep quality, correct system installation, and ongoing care. Cheap systems or improper installation often fail within 2–5 years. This is exactly why installer certification and material quality matter.
Yes. Nichols Concrete Sealing is certified through Microcement USA and installs the Microcement USA system. We are one of only 3 certified microcement installers in St. George, Utah. The certification requires hands-on training and verified installation competency — not just paying a licensing fee. If you're getting quotes from other contractors in Southern Utah, ask them what system they use and whether they're certified to install it.
Microcement is available in a wide range of colors and can be customized to match almost any design direction — from warm naturals to deep charcoals to creams and greiges. The finish texture is also variable, from very smooth to slightly more textured. Because every installation is handcrafted, there is natural variation within the surface, which is part of the aesthetic appeal. We work with you during the design phase to select the right color and finish for your project.
Yes. We travel throughout Utah for microcement projects. Northern Utah — Salt Lake City, Park City, Draper, Cottonwood Heights, Holladay, Sandy, Alpine, Highland, Heber City, Midway, and the Wasatch Front — is an active market for us. High-end residential and luxury remodel projects are exactly what we specialize in. The custom homes, ski chalets, and luxury spec builds in these markets are well-suited to microcement. Contact us to discuss your project and we'll make it work.
Very much so. Park City's mountain modern aesthetic — clean lines, natural textures, high-end materials — is a perfect fit for microcement. Ski chalets, vacation homes, and custom builds in Park City (84060, 84068, 84098) and Heber/Midway are increasingly specifying microcement for bathrooms, showers, floors, and feature walls. We are one of the few certified installers in Utah equipped to do this work at the level these projects demand.
Microcement is a premium installation — expect to budget accordingly. In Utah, professionally installed microcement typically ranges based on surface type, system complexity, and scope. Wet areas and showers require reinforced systems and cost more. Dry walls are the most straightforward. Small projects carry higher per-square-foot pricing because setup, dry time, and travel are fixed costs regardless of size. We provide free estimates and won't give you a square-foot number without understanding your actual project.
Properly installed and maintained microcement lasts 10–20+ years. The longevity depends heavily on three things: substrate prep quality, system selection for the application, and sealer maintenance. The sealer is the sacrificial wear layer — it can be refreshed every few years without redoing the microcement itself. Floors in high-traffic areas may need a sealer refresh sooner. The microcement underneath, if installed correctly, will outlast most other finishes.
Minor surface damage — scratches, scuffs — can often be addressed with sealer refinishing. Deeper damage to the microcement layer itself is harder to spot-repair invisibly because of the handcrafted trowel texture. Microcement is not like tile where a single piece can be swapped out. For this reason, quality prep, the right sealer spec, and not using abrasive cleaners on the surface matter. We discuss maintenance expectations on every project before installation begins.
For most installations you don't need to vacate, but you do need to plan around dry times. Each coat requires cure time before the next is applied — the process typically spans 2–5 days depending on scope and conditions. The area being worked needs to be clear and climate-controlled. We'll walk you through a project timeline during the estimate so there are no surprises. Some sealers have odor during application — ventilation is important and we'll flag that when relevant.
